OTTAWA MAGAZINE - ZEN

calm, creative and custom - a chic sanctuary in nepean

Zen featured in Ottawa Magazine

The original house was essentially a bungalow, though the architect had sketched in a plan to graft on a future second-floor master bedroom and suite. Anne and Dave didn’t need another bedroom, but Bex saw the space as an opportunity for a luxurious media room and a spa bathroom for Anne — and a chance to open up the whole house to more light

This is a house that defines subtlety — a major renovation that skilfully preserves the character of the original house, both outside and in, while transforming the living experience. “Our goal was always to celebrate the natural siting of the house and its original form,” says Fernando. “It’s a comforting shell, but unexpected inside.”

OTTAWA MAGAZINE - The reflex house

hidden entrance, asymmetrical nooks, peekaboo holes - mystery pervades playful home

The Reflex House is a new build in Hintonburg. It was featured in the February 2018 issue of Ottawa Magazine

Traditionally, homes are centred around the hearth, a place of warmth and light. But a new family home in the Civic Hospital area puts a modern twist on this old custom. Instead of a chimney, it features a lightwell: a glass-floor spine that serves as a modern hub of Mario Scaffardi and Cindy Lagarde’s home

Inside, the deconstruction continues with peekaboo holes, interrupted sight lines, a labyrinth of stairs and steps, niches for showcasing ceramics and other treasures, plus pleasingly asymmetrical nooks: perfect lounging spaces for Milou, their 10-year-old cat. Instead of the ubiquitous open-concept interior, there is mystery here, a sense of unfolding and privacy despite the lack of obvious closed-off spaces.

Modern family: a mid-century Bungalow

The Borg is a renovation in Altavista. It was featured in Ottawa Magazine

Arriving through the side door that opens into Jerome’s photography studio, clients enter a corridor that resembles a cathedral, the ceiling soaring to 23 feet, the passageway lit with an array of glowing Bocci pendants. The studio doubles as a gallery space, the lighting designed to allow Jerome to show his work to full effect when he chooses to mount a display. The overall feeling, though, is both professional and warm, with a textured concrete floor and sleek yet comfy couches and a couple of fun Swoop loungers.
